Saying Grace
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, about 1740
Did you know
What is the first voice this house hears in the morning, and the last at night?
Care of the soul had hours. In a serious house the day opened and closed with prayer, and often with a chapter read aloud. Grace was said over food. The soul was not tended at a yearly holiday. It was tended at the table, before work, and before sleep. Many houses were careless. The careless house still knew what it was skipping.
