Yellowstone

Land, work, and a father who confuses stewardship with a kingdom.

The ranch work is the honest half. A family can love a place and be ruined by refusing any limit on what they may do to keep it. John Dutton is that refusal. Admire the grass and the crew. Do not take the king's advice on what a father is for.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

Horses, cattle, the brand. The work is photographed as work.

  3. Piety

    2/10

The land is holy. The holy is possessive.

  4. Courage

    5/10

They fight. Every fight is declared existential.

  5. Republic

    3/10

Law is a tool. The next tool is a man with a gun.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

    Pride, violence, and the brand.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The pressure on the land is real: development, taxes, grief.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

They want to hand the valley down. The method soils the heir.

Live historicallySeparate, in your own mind, the work of keeping a place from the right to crush a neighbor.

Dutton Ranch

Inheritance as identity. A ranch can be a stewardship or a fortress. This tradition picks the fortress.

A ranch is one of the few plots television has left where stewardship is literal: grass, water, winter, the people who work it. The Dutton way of telling that story keeps turning the stewardship into a blood right against neighbors, tribes, and the state. The work is real. The throne is the lie they tell about the work.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Cattle, horses, weather. The work is not pretend.

  2. Household

    5/10

Blood is everything. That keeps them and blinds them.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    The land is the god.

  4. Courage

    5/10

They will fight. They call every fight a necessity.

  5. Republic

    3/10

The valley's law is whatever the family can enforce.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

    Pride is the family style.

  7. Truth

    4/10

The grievance is partly true and wholly indulged.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

They mean to hand the ground down. The means corrupt the handing.

Live historicallyIf the land matters to you, learn one true thing about who kept it before your family name.
