The Holy Bible, King James Version

The standard itself. Read it. The meter does not improve it.

This is the King James Version. A Kindle copy may wear a later date. The text is the one finished in 1611 and read in houses ever since. The desk does not grade it against the evening's shows. The shows are graded against it.

Read it aloud. A score of 100 is not praise invented for a page. It is the only honest number. If a house keeps one book, it is this one.

The eight

  1. Industry

    10/10

It is work: a chapter, a household, a life. Nothing here is a shortcut.

  2. Household

    10/10

Marriage, children, and a people are the story, not the backdrop.

  3. Piety

    10/10

This is the measure the other seven are measured by.

  4. Courage

    10/10

The cost is named, and people pay it without taking it back.

  5. Republic

    10/10

A law above the king. A neighbor is not a prop.

  6. Temperance

    10/10

Appetite is told the truth about itself.

  7. Truth

    10/10

It does not flatter the reader. The hard parts stay in.

  8. Stewardship

    10/10

Copied, kept, and handed on. That is what stewardship means.

Little House on the Prairie

The standard, filmed. Work, a house, prayer, a town, and something left in the ground for the people after them.

This is the nearest thing on the modern shelf to the household the meter is measuring. Charles works. Caroline keeps the inside of the world in order. The girls are taught, corrected, and loved without being asked to raise their parents. The town is small enough that a cruelty is everybody's business. Some later episodes chase a disaster because television gets hungry. The early years do not need the disaster. A crop, a schoolhouse, and a Sunday will do.

Put it on. Start at the beginning. Let the youngest stay for the ones about a harvest and a hymn, and be in the room when an episode turns hard. Then go outside and do one chore the house will still be using in the morning.

The eight

  1. Industry

    10/10

Plowing, hunting, teaching, milling. The day is made of jobs a house can eat.

  2. Household

    10/10

The Ingalls table is the government of the story. Children are the point of the labor, not the audience for it.

  3. Piety

    9/10

Grace at the table, church, and a conscience that can overrule a mood. It is the family's air.

  4. Courage

    9/10

Charles walks into weather, debt, and other people's trouble because the alternative is not being a man.

  5. Republic

    8/10

Walnut Grove argues, votes, fails, and still has to live together the next morning.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Want is real. Waste is a sin they can feel. Feasts are rare and therefore serious.

  7. Truth

    8/10

The hardest episodes are about a lie or a pride that has to be walked back in public.

  8. Stewardship

    10/10

A claim, a school, a name. They are planting what they will not all live to sit under.

Live historicallyGive a child a real job this week that the household will notice if it is left undone.

The Hiding Place

Read it as adults first. Then decide which child is old enough.

This is not a thriller about clever hiding places. The Beje is a watch shop, and the courage is domestic: a bed, a fake wall, a father who will not lie. The camp is not softened. Neither is the demand she comes home with, which is harder than survival.

Do not assign it as a unit and then move on. If the house reads it, talk about the door. Whose knock would you actually answer.

The eight

  1. Industry

    8/10

The shop keeps hours while the house keeps a secret.

  2. Household

    9/10

Father, sisters, and a narrow house become a refuge.

  3. Piety

    10/10

Faith is the reason they risk the house, not the decoration after.

  4. Courage

    10/10

They know the cost and open the door.

  5. Republic

    9/10

A neighbor is a person in the attic, not a position.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

The camp strips everything. The book does not become a revenge.

  7. Truth

    9/10

She tells the ugly parts, including her own hatred.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

The point of surviving is to tell it so the next house will open its door.

A Man for All Seasons

Keep it. Silence, law, and a conscience that will not be managed.

More is not a fanatic in search of a stake. He is a lawyer who uses every honest silence the law allows, because he wants to live and stay with his family. The film honors that wish. Then the oath asks for his mind, not only his quiet, and he will not give it. Cromwell is the modern man: results, irritation at a scruple, a smile. Alice and Margaret are the cost. A conscience that forgets it has a household is not yet More's.

Older teens and adults. It is talk, and the talk is the action. If a room you are in is demanding statements, this is the film.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

    Law used with precision.

  2. Household

    8/10

He loves his house and still will not buy it with a lie.

  3. Piety

    10/10

Faith is the center, and it is not a mood.

  4. Courage

    10/10

    The refusal.

  5. Republic

    9/10

A state that wants the inner yes.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

He avoids drama as long as honesty allows.

  7. Truth

    10/10

He will not say the false sentence.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

It hands you your signature as a serious object.

Live historicallyDo not sign the thing you do not believe, even if your refusal looks like pride.

Little House in the Big Woods

The pattern of a house. Put it in a child's hands.

This is not nostalgia as a filter. It is a sequence: the hog, the attic, the Sabbath, the visitor. Laura watches adults do necessary things and is expected to learn them. The fiddle comes after the work, which is the right order.

A house that reads this and then goes back to a screen for the rest of the night has only collected a mood. Read it, and then do one thing the book does: make the food, keep the Sunday, or learn the song.

The eight

  1. Industry

    10/10

Food, cloth, and fuel are made, not ordered.

  2. Household

    10/10

Ma and Pa are a marriage. The children have a place in it.

  3. Piety

    8/10

Sunday is kept. Vanity is named and put down.

  4. Courage

    7/10

The dangers are wolves, winter, and getting lost. Nobody pretends they are nothing.

  5. Republic

    8/10

The town dance and the store are neighbors, not a crowd.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

    Appetite waits on the season.

  7. Truth

    8/10

A child's memory, plain, including the spankings.

  8. Stewardship

    10/10

The whole book is a set of skills handed to the next child.

Live historicallyStart it with the children this week. Stop when the chapter ends, not when the app suggests another.
