That Christmas

A town of households. Some of the adults fail and are allowed to come back. That is the right shape.

That Christmas is a set of household stories, which makes it more serious than the animation suggests. Parents fail in ordinary ways and the children are not asked to become the parents forever. A family can watch it in the season it belongs to. The question afterward is who in the story was left waiting, and who came back.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

Ordinary work and ordinary failure: a parent who does not arrive, a meal that has to happen anyway.

  2. Household

    7/10

The stories are families. The repairs are domestic, not magical careers.

  3. Piety

    4/10

Christmas is a duty to the people in the house, not only a mood.

  4. Courage

    5/10

A child has to be brave in a small, true way when an adult does not show.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A town where the households can see each other.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

    Warm, and not hungry.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The adults are allowed to be wrong without being monsters.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

What is handed on is a holiday spent on the people who are actually there.

Live historicallySpend the next holiday hour on the people in the room, not on the next film.

Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story

An adult picture about telling the truth and staying at the work. Not for the children.

Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley follow Maria Bamford from a childhood in Duluth through a career built on saying the intrusive thought out loud and then doing the next set. The standard does not score an illness as a brand, and it does not score a laugh as a cure. What it can score is a person who refused the flattering lie and kept the work. That is an evening for a grown person.

Do not put it on because the children are in the room. The jokes go where a child's questions should not have to follow. If someone in your house is carrying a mind that will not rest, this film is not the help. You are.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

The jokes are labor, practiced for years, not a confession with a spotlight.

  2. Household

    5/10

Parents, a marriage, a life kept. The film is about her, not the table, and it does not despise the table.

  3. Piety

    4/10

She does not mock the need for help. She does not hand you a creed either.

  4. Courage

    7/10

She says the frightening thing in front of a room, and she does it again the next night.

  5. Republic

    4/10

Other comics speak. A public is not quite a commonwealth.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

The darkness is the material. It is not a dare, and it is not tidy.

  7. Truth

    8/10

She will not lie about the inside of her head. That is the virtue of the film.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

A voice kept long enough that other people stop thinking they are the only one.

Live historicallyIf someone in the house is struggling in their mind, sit with them. Do not hand them a screen and call it company.
