Younger

33It will not make you better. Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The lie is the premise, and the show thinks the lie is charming. It isn't, once you say it plainly.

Household, Piety, Courage, Republic, Temperance, Truth, Stewardship are the thin ones.

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

Liza needs the job. That part is easy to pity, and the show wants the pity to cover the rest: a younger man, an office, a daughter who has to keep the story straight. Publishing, in the rare scenes that remember it, is a craft. The series is not about the craft. It is about getting away with a face.

Not for thirteen. If it is already in the row because the account watched it, say what the show will not: a love that requires a false birthday is not a love.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Publishing is shown as labor: reads, covers, a boss who decides.

  2. Household

    4/10

A daughter is part of the secret. A romance is built on the fake age.

  3. Piety

    2/10

Nothing is owed except the brand.

  4. Courage

    4/10

Starting over takes nerve. She spends it on a costume.

  5. Republic

    3/10

An office as a mating ground.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

TV-14. Sex is the recurring joke and the recurring plot.

  7. Truth

    2/10

Every good thing in it depends on people not knowing who she is.

  8. Stewardship

    2/10

What it hands a girl is a permission to invent an age.

Live historicallyTell the truth about your own age and your own work to one person who has only seen the polished version.

Dancing with the Stars

A real discipline, used as a fame machine. The rehearsal is better than the vote.

Ballroom is a craft with a hold, a count, and a partner you can injure if you are careless. The show knows this in the rehearsal hall and forgets it on the night, when the costume and the cheer and the celebrity story take the camera. The pros are the workers. The stars are the product. Once in a while a person actually learns, and you can see the difference between effort and exposure.

Adults, as light fare. If a child watches, point at the practice, not the score. A dance is a cooperation. A spotlight is not.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Rehearsal is work. The pros carry it.

  2. Household

    2/10

Pairs for the season. No house.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    None.

  4. Courage

    4/10

    Performance nerves. Little else.

  5. Republic

    2/10

    A voting public.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

Glitter is the point of the broadcast.

  7. Truth

    4/10

The training is true. The tearful package is optional and often not.

  8. Stewardship

    3/10

A skill flashes and leaves with the trophy.
