What it really is

It began on Hallmark and lives in the same country as When Calls the Heart: a young century, a town small enough to be ashamed of itself, and women who decide that a child without a parent is their business. That decision is the standard in one sentence.

It is softer than the history it borrows. Softness here is a mercy, not a lie, so long as you remember that raising children is heavier than the lighting. Watch it with your own children if they are old enough to ask why some kids have to be taken in. Then answer them without a speech.

Live historically

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

Keeping a house full of children is the labor. It is not glamorous and it does not stop.

  2. Household

    9/10

The whole story is a household being built for kids who arrived without one.

  3. Piety

    7/10

Duty is treated as holy even when the sermon is light.

  4. Courage

    8/10

They take in a child when it costs them the peace of the house.

  5. Republic

    8/10

A small settlement argues, in public, about what it owes the fatherless.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

The tone is restrained. Nobody is selling you a vice.

  7. Truth

    7/10

The past the sisters share has to be said out loud before the home will hold.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

Posterity is not a theme. It is the cast.
