The Breadwinner

A father in the house is the right picture. The film can only imagine him as a mess.

Nate sold cars and thought the hard part of the day happened at the lot. Katie's invention takes off, and the day becomes lunches, mess, and three children who were never theoretical. A father doing the work of the house is something this desk will always rather see than another man fleeing it. The trouble is the only joke the picture trusts: incompetence, lumber, a porch in ruins.

Watch it if the house wants a comedy and no one in it is being shamed for the reversal. Then do the work without the laugh track. The film is lighter than the job.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

He had a job. The domestic day is also a job, and he is bad at it at first, which is fair.

  2. Household

    7/10

Three children and a marriage that has to survive a reversal. The children are the point, not the props.

  3. Piety

    3/10

No reverence. The laugh is doing the preaching.

  4. Courage

    5/10

He stays in the harder room. The film treats that as slapstick.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A dealership and a suburb. Neighbors are scenery.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Mayhem, not meanness. It is built for a family and it mostly behaves.

  7. Truth

    5/10

It admits he does not know the work. Then it asks you to laugh at the not-knowing for the whole runtime.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

The house is what he is supposed to keep. The film remembers that in flashes.
