Mister Rogers' Neighborhood

The standard, for the age it was made for. Slow on purpose.

Rogers believed a child could be told the truth about anger, death, and a mistake, if you did not rush and did not smirk. He also believed the people who make the bread and drive the bus were worth a visit. Both beliefs are the whole of a good childhood hour.

Put it on for the young child. Sit in the room. The sitting is part of the show.

Little House on the Prairie

One of the few shows that thinks a household is a civilization.

Charles Ingalls is not a perfect man and the series is not a documentary. It is still the rare television that treats a father, a mother, a school, and a Sunday as enough plot. The dangers are weather, pride, a debt, a neighbor's need.

Watch it when you want the house to remember that a life can be made of those things. Skip the later years when the town becomes a soap.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

Plowing, teaching, milling, winter. Work is the plot.

  2. Household

    9/10

Ma, Pa, and the girls are the argument. The town passes through their door.

  3. Piety

    8/10

Grace at the table is ordinary. Church is not a joke.

  4. Courage

    7/10

They stay through the season that would excuse leaving.

  5. Republic

    7/10

A school, a church, a store, a town meeting. The republic is small and visible.

  6. Temperance

    8/10

Want is real and usually unanswered. That is the discipline.

  7. Truth

    8/10

Hardship is not a twist. It is the weather.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

The whole point is what the children will have because the parents remained.
