Fallout

The old world's bill comes due. Ironic, bloody, and not empty of a moral.

Would you still put it on?

Vault-dwellers surface into a ruined America their parents' corporations helped burn.

What it really is

The surface is a joke about retro America until it isn't. Someone sold the future, pocketed the vaults, and left the grandchildren the ash. That is a stewardship story, and a bitter one. The show also loves a splatter gag, and the gag keeps trying to fire the moral.

Watch the brother and sister, and the question of what a pleasant lie is worth. Do not let the retro font convince you nihilism is wisdom. The standard agrees with the indictment of a faithless elite. It does not agree that nothing is left but a costume and a gun. If you surface from it meaner, you watched it wrong.

Live historically

Fix one thing in your house you have been meaning to replace. Maintenance is a vote for posterity.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

People still farm, fix, and barter. The wasteland has jobs.

  2. Household

    5/10

Families lie. A few of them still cross the dirt for each other.

  3. Piety

    4/10

The vault's cheer is a false religion. Real conscience shows up late.

  4. Courage

    7/10

A naive woman walks into the ruin anyway.

  5. Republic

    5/10

It remembers that a republic can be sold by its companies.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

The gore and the joke travel together. The joke often wins.

  7. Truth

    7/10

The pleasant story of the past is the lie the show exists to break.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

Stewardship failed before the bombs. That is the actual theme.
