The Monkees

A light variety hour. The house is a clubhouse, and the songs are the reason.

The Monkees were a made band that became a real one, and the show is the made part: running, mugging, a song in the middle. There is no moral and no rot. A child can watch the songs. An adult can hear which ones were better than the premise.

Use it as music with pictures, not as a picture of a life.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

They rehearse. The fiction that they don't is the joke. The records were the work.

  2. Household

    4/10

    Roommates who like each other.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    No creed. A cheerful noise.

  4. Courage

    3/10

They are willing to look foolish.

  5. Republic

    3/10

No town. A beach and a set.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

    Joy without cruelty.

  7. Truth

    5/10

It is play, and it looks like play.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

    The songs outlived the bits.

Live historicallyPlay one song all the way through, without the bit, and see if it earns the repeat.

Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh

A friendship and a roof. Mild, silly, short. Fine in small measure.

Tip already saved the world in the film. The series is wiser to ignore that and watch a girl get an alien through a Tuesday. The jokes are broad. The kindness is simple enough for a young child.

One or two, with you in the room. A queue of them is only bright noise.

The eight

  1. Industry

    3/10

Oh tries human tasks and fails. The failure is the joke, not a craft.

  2. Household

    6/10

A mother, a daughter, a guest who has to learn the house.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    None.

  4. Courage

    3/10

Small bravery: school, a neighbor, telling the truth about a mess.

  5. Republic

    3/10

    A suburb of gags.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

Gentle. The embarrassment does not last.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The alien is ignorant, not wicked. The show usually corrects him.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

A habit of making room for someone who does not know the rules yet.

Live historicallyLet a child explain one house rule to a guest, patiently. Then stop the episode.
