The soul
In 1776
The ordinary American in 1776 believed you have a soul, and that the soul does not die when the body does. Tending it was not a hobby for ministers. It was the point of a life. Church membership was not the same as belief. Plenty of people sat loosely. Almost none of them lived in a world that treated the soul as optional.
- The soul survives the body.
- It faces judgment, and an afterlife of heaven or hell.
- The state of the soul is the most important thing in a life.
- Faith in Christ, repentance, and a moral life were how a person sought to keep it.
What they would make of us
They would not understand a people who can talk for an hour about a show and never once about where a soul is going. A screen that trains appetite, sneering, and restlessness would look to them like a danger to the soul, not a way to relax. They would ask what you are protecting, if not that.
What did this house tend today, besides the next thing to watch?
