Spellbound

A child trying to heal a marriage. The burden is too much of the plot, and the love is real.

Spellbound puts a daughter in charge of repairing her parents, and then it is kind enough to suggest the parents have to do the actual repairing. Children of a strained house will feel the first part too accurately. Watch it only with them, and say the sentence the magic obscures: it is not the child's job to turn the monsters back into a mother and a father.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

She takes on a quest that should have been her parents' work.

  2. Household

    6/10

The curse is a marriage in trouble. The film wants the marriage restored, which is the right want.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Magic stands in for the conversation they would not have.

  4. Courage

    6/10

    She goes anyway, for them.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A kingdom waiting on one girl's errand.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

A musical quest, lighter than the trouble it is about.

  7. Truth

    5/10

It tells the truth that a child feels the weather of a marriage. It is softer about how little she can fix.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

What she wants to hand back is her parents, to each other.

Live historicallyIf you watch it, tell the child plainly that the parents' trouble is not hers to solve.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

The lie is the plot, which is right. The trip is a product. Older teens.

Peter wants to be a teenager. Mysterio wants an audience and builds the disasters he then saves. The useful scene is the reveal that the elementals were a show, and that a room full of people will believe a screen. The class trip, the crush, the aunt: they are real enough to make the lie land, and thin enough that the film keeps leaving them for the skybeam.

Older teenagers. Talk about the glasses. A tool that tells you who the enemy is, without your own eyes, is the villain. That part is worth the ticket. The rest is a chapter.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

A school trip. The hero's work keeps canceling it.

  2. Household

    4/10

An aunt at a distance. A girl he cannot tell the truth.

  3. Piety

    2/10

    None.

  4. Courage

He takes the responsibility back when the charming man is exposed.

  5. Republic

    4/10

  6. Temperance

    4/10

He wants a normal appetite and is punished for it by the plot.

  7. Truth

    8/10

The whole story is a manufactured video. Seeing that is the win.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

A suit and a secret handed to a boy who is not ready, by men who are not his father.
