Colin from Accounts

A romance that is also a joke about how crude they can be. The dog is the decent idea.

The premise is sound: you hurt something small and now it is yours. The show knows that and then writes the rest in the key of an adult comedy that wants you to know it will say anything. The dog is the part to believe. The banter is optional and often not worth it.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

A brewery, a medical office. They have jobs.

  2. Household

    4/10

A made household, starting from an accident and a dog.

  3. Piety

    1/10

No reverence. The joke is allergic to it.

  4. Courage

    4/10

They take responsibility for the animal. That is the moral core, quickly decorated.

  5. Republic

    3/10

    Friends, a city, no commons.

  6. Temperance

    2/10

The humor is explicit on purpose.

  7. Truth

    5/10

The accident is not shrugged off. Someone pays the vet.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

A dog is a commitment. The rest is a maybe.

Fawlty Towers

A perfect farce about a proud man. The laugh requires his humiliation, and it is earned.

Basil Fawlty wants to be thought a gentleman more than he wants to run a decent hotel. Every episode punishes exactly that. Sybil, Manuel, and Polly are the people the work actually depends on. The farce is cruel and it is accurate. Adults only, because the cruelty is the instrument, but it is aimed at the snob rather than at the weak. Twelve episodes. Do not ask for a revival.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

A hotel is work. Basil will do any amount of scheming to avoid the honest part.

  2. Household

    3/10

A marriage of contempt and dependence. Sybil is right and unloved.

  3. Piety

    1/10

No piety. Class embarrassment is the religion.

  4. Courage

    2/10

    Cowardice, brilliantly played.

  5. Republic

    3/10

A small business that is also a social order.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

Twelve episodes. The limit is part of the excellence.

  7. Truth

    7/10

Pretension is exposed. That is the moral, and it never softens.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

It has been handed down carefully, because there are so few of them.
