Octonauts

Rescue plus a fact. A crew with jobs. One of the useful shows for a small child.

The Octonauts go out, do a job, and come back. Someone is the captain, the facts are the facts, and the creature is not a plush with a lesson attached. It is among the few series here a parent can put on for a young child without translating it afterward. Still turn it off. A good crew is not a substitute for the bath.

Camp Snoopy

Small discouragements, a dog who tries, friends who do not leave. Gentle enough for the young.

Peanuts works because Charlie Brown is disappointed and does not become a cynic, and because Snoopy's grandeur is a game everyone can see through and still enjoy. Camp is a good frame for that. The new series is softer and brighter than the old specials, and a little less sad, which for a five-year-old is the right adjustment. The friendships are particular. Lucy is still Lucy.

Good for the young end of the house. Afterward, tell them one thing that went wrong in your own day and how you intend to try again tomorrow.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

Camp is chores and trials. Charlie Brown fails a lot and keeps the job.

  2. Household

    6/10

Friends as the household. Parents are letters from home.

  3. Piety

    4/10

No chapel. A conscience that feels like Charlie Brown's, which is not nothing.

  4. Courage

    6/10

He tries again in front of people who have seen him fail.

  5. Republic

    8/10

A little company with roles: the blanket, the piano, the bully, the dog.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

Disappointment is the portion. Nobody is rich or cruel for fun.

  7. Truth

    7/10

Feelings are plain. The gag is not a lie about how the world works.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

Schulz's children are a culture a house can actually hand down.

Live historicallyLet a child fail at something small, in front of you, and try it once more before you fix it.
