The work
Come and help keep the house.
Live Historic is a young nonprofit. The board keeps the purpose and the books. The founder keeps the desk until these seats are filled. We are not hiring a layer of chiefs. Three people, and the neighbors who help them, are enough to grow.
How the house is set
- The board. The purpose, the law, and the books. Not a job.
- The desk. The standard. Held until an editor can share it.
- Three seats. The measure, the houses, and the gifts.
- Readers, hosts, and hands. Volunteer, under one of those seats.
Houses that do this work at a larger size — Common Sense Media, and the review desks at Plugged In — grow the same three ways: someone keeps the standard, someone takes it to families, and someone asks for the gifts that pay for the first two. We are the small version of that. A gift is not a tax deduction until the determination letter arrives.
Three open seats
Pay begins when the gifts cover a wage. Until then, the person who writes may start as a volunteer and stand first for the seat. Say which you can do.
01
Editor of the Measure
Reports to The desk.
Keep one standard, so the number still means something when more people write.
- Read every new review against the eight questions before it is treated as settled.
- Train the volunteer readers and send back the paragraph that is unfair, thin, or slick.
- Say no when a score flatters a story the house should leave.
You have sat with stories and can say, in a plain paragraph, why a house should keep one or leave it. You can be corrected.
02
Voice of the House
Reports to The desk.
Take the measure to real households, and answer the ones who write back.
- Sit with parents, churches, schools, and homeschool tables. Leave them a review they can use that week.
- Write the public letter in the voice of the house. No slogan in place of a sentence.
- Keep a list of who said they would come, and write to them again.
You can talk to a room without performing. You would rather be understood than admired.
03
Keeper of the Gifts
Reports to The desk, and the board on the books.
Ask for the support that lets the other two seats become paid work.
- Keep the roll of people who give time or money, and write each thank-you yourself.
- Prepare the short letter a foundation or a household can read: what the gift pays for, and what it does not.
- Tell the board the truth about what came in and what went out.
You can ask without flattering. You will not sell the scores, the list of houses, or a child’s evening.
Or come as a volunteer
Reader. Score titles under the editor. Send one sample review with your letter.
Host. Keep one table in your town. You already have a room and people who will come.
Hand. The roll, the thank-you, an evening of copying. You work under the Keeper.
The letter
It is read by the people who hold the door. It is not posted. Write as yourself.
