Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

Sophie wants the story that flatters her. Agatha is filed under witch because she does not. The school is a machine for that filing, and the film is sharp enough to hate the machine for an hour. Then it spends the second hour on transformations, a prince, and a last battle, which is how a fantasy tells you it ran out of nerve.

Watchable at thirteen if you are willing to pause on the sort: who decided, and what did it cost the girl who believed the decision. Do not let the gowns be the lesson.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

A school, mostly of gowns and fights. Study is a montage.

  2. Household

    6/10

The friendship is the spine. Parents are the door they left through.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Good and evil are houses, then costumes. A creed never arrives.

  4. Courage

    6/10

Each girl refuses the role the school hands her. That refusal is the courage.

  5. Republic

    5/10

An institution sorting children. The sort is the villainy.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

PG-13 and long. The violence is storybook until it isn't.

  7. Truth

    6/10

It says the label was a lie. It is less sure what the truth would require.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

A fairy tale ought to hand a child a standard. This one hands a look.

13: The Musical

49Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The party is the idol again. The songs are fun. The rite is trying to climb out from under them.

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

Evan Goldman moves, his parents have split, and he tries to buy a new life with invitations. The musical is cheerful about the scheme and, late, ashamed of it in the way these stories are ashamed: a song, a correction, a party that still happens. Pair it with the Sandler bat mitzvah film already on the desk. Same lesson, more rhymes.

Fine at thirteen. Ask what the ceremony is for if the popular boy does not come.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

Rehearsal is real. Popularity is the wage.

  2. Household

    5/10

A mother starting over. A father on a phone. Friends who might become a people.

  3. Piety

    5/10

A bar mitzvah is the engine, not a backdrop, even while the DJ looms.

  4. Courage

    5/10

He has to risk the cool table.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A middle school as the whole state.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

Mild. The meanness is social, and it is the joke for too long.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The turn is that the guest list was the small thing.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

A rite exists to hand a child to something older than the cafeteria.
