Temperance
4
Is appetite shown and then put down, or are you being trained to want the next one?
On Making Fun, temperance is a 4. A thin mark. The pleasure of the story is the loss of the limit. You are trained to want the next one.
What it is
Drink, lust, rage, luxury, a feed that does not end. A story may show any of those. It fails when it teaches you to stay.
A high mark
Excess may appear. It is not the teacher.
A thin mark
The pleasure of the story is the loss of the limit. You are trained to want the next one.
What it is not
Showing a vice is not the same as teaching it. A hangover with a bill can outscore a glamorous binge.
What to look for
- 1Excess can be in the story. The question is whether anyone puts it back down.
- 2If the camera stays, ask why. To tell the truth, or to train the want.
- 3A person who can stop is different from a story that laughs at stopping.
- 4The thing itself can be the appetite. If it is built so you cannot leave, that is the mark.
