Tonight
Ten for the evening
One to ten. Newest, most watched, highest on the Living Meter. Prime, Disney+, Hulu, Hallmark, Acorn, and Netflix.
Grief, siblings, and a house that eats people. Love is stubborn here. So is dread.
Five siblings, two parents, and a house that does not give people back in the condition it found them. The scares are earned, which is rare. Rarer: the show is actually about a family that failed to tell the truth in time, and about whether they can still choose one another after.
An 1800 household would have recognized the moral even if it rejected the ghosts. Secrets in a house become the house. Do not watch this alone and call it a thrill. Watch it, if you watch it, as a picture of what unspoken grief does to brothers. Then say the thing your own people have been circling.

Live historicallyName one family fact everyone knows and nobody says. Say it once, kindly, on purpose.
Family sins on a hundred-year loop. The puzzle is brilliant. Do not let it replace the people.
Children go missing in Winden and the reason is a knot tied by people who refused to tell the truth in four different decades. The mechanism is dazzling, and dazzling is the temptation. You can finish Dark proud of having understood it and unchanged about your own secrets.
The part that belongs to the standard is simpler than the chart on the wall. What a house will not say becomes the weather of the people who are not born yet. If you watch it, watch with a pause button and a slightly humbler claim on your own goodness. You are in the knot too. Everybody who has ever kept a family fact for a more convenient year is in the knot.
Industry

Excellence is real. So is the empty room after. A gift is not a personality.
Beth Harmon learns a hard, beautiful craft from a quiet janitor and then tries to live on talent and tranquilizers. The show loves the board, and it is right to. A standard that does not love excellence is just resentment with a hymn book. The show also, eventually, loves the moment she lets other people into the work.
That second love is the one to take home. Genius plus isolation plus a chemical is a very modern altar, and it is a bad one. Watch the games. Notice who is in the room when she finally plays the match that matters. Then go practice the thing you are good at, and also eat with somebody. Both. Not one as a reward for the other.
Industry

She studies. The board does not care about her feelings, and that is good for her.

A talent fully used is a kind of stewardship. A life solely used up is not.
Live historicallyPractice a skill for forty quiet minutes. Tell one person what you are working on. Let them care.
Keep it. Ambition, temper, charity, and a mother who tells the truth about anger.
Jo's writing is treated as a vocation, not a quirk. Amy's wanting is not only vanity. Meg's plain marriage is given dignity. Beth's goodness is not a punishment the film smirks at. Marmee telling Jo that she is angry every day and has learned to govern it is one of the better speeches about temperance on film. The period dress is not the point. The point is a household that is short of money and long on standards.
Watch it over a weekend, not in scraps. The scraps will give you only the romance. The romance is the smallest room in the house.

It hands girls a house with room for work.
Live historicallyLet a girl in the house want work of her own, and do not mock the want.
Keep it. A room, a reasonable doubt, and the courage to be the first no.
Eleven men want the afternoon back. The twelfth wants the testimony walked through, because a life is not a schedule. The film is a whole civics lesson in one sweatbox: prejudice with a smile, prejudice with a shout, and the slow work of looking at a knife and a train schedule until the story the state told no longer holds. Nobody is romanticized for being angry. The quiet man is not a saint. He is simply unwilling to be rushed into a killing.
A teenager should see this before they see another thriller about a genius detective. Justice here looks like staying in the chair. That is a picture this house can use.

Keep it. Stewardship with almost no speeches. The people have to stand up and go home.
WALL-E's love of the little things, a plant, a song, a cockroach, is not consumer cute. It is the last attention left on earth. The Axiom is a fair picture of a life that is all convenience and no weight: kind people who cannot walk, governed by a system that filed the return order away. The captain's decision to stand is the human climax, and it is played with the seriousness of a real command.
Children understand the plant. Adults should understand the chair. Watch it, then do not order something you could walk to get.

The prophecy is a lie. The basement is the truth. One of the better family films.
Emmet is a rule-follower in a company town, and the film is smart enough to like his loyalty to the instructions before it likes his rebellion. The villain is a man who glues the world so nothing can be rearranged. Then the story steps into a basement, and the villain is also a father who will not let his son play. Both facts stand. Order without a child becomes a display case. Play without any order is not the ending either. They build together, with the lid off.
Witty without rotting the family. A father should watch the last ten minutes without a phone.
Industry

The errand is real. The leaving is the wound. Watch it, and do not let the science excuse the absence.
Cooper is a pilot turned farmer in a world that has started to lie to itself about the harvest. The film is on the side of the harvest and the truth about it, which is right, and on the side of a mission that costs a childhood, which it tries to pay back with physics and a father's voice across time. Love is asked to do work in the universe. Maybe it does. The thing a house can use without a lecture is smaller: a girl who needed him in the room, and a culture that told farmers to stop telling the truth.
It is long, loud, and often magnificent. Let a teenager see it. Then ask whether saving everyone is a sentence you say when you do not want to stay for dinner. Sometimes it is literally true. Count those times. They are few.

It hands on a hard trade, and you must not romanticize the trade.
Live historicallyIf you must go far, leave the child a true account, not a myth.
Fear is not love. A sister is not a mistake. The song is famous. The reversal is better.
Elsa is told concealment is love, and the kingdom pays for the lie in ice. Anna's act of true love is not a kiss from a prince she met yesterday. It is a sister stepping between a sword and the person she will not give up. Hans is a suitor who wanted the throne. The film is clear about him, which saves a generation of children from one bad lesson and nearly teaches them another: that a stranger's charm is the thing to suspect. Good. Suspect it.
The storm is a picture of a powerful girl who was trained to be ashamed. Let her out. Do not let her burn the town down either. The ending holds both.

Competence inside a family. The medicine is the gift. The parents are the point. Keep it for teens.
Lahela is a prodigy physician and a teenager with a mother who is also her boss and a father who surfs and stays. The show's good instinct is that being right about a diagnosis does not make you right about a family, a friend, or a limit. Hawaii is a place here, not a postcard only, though the postcard is present.
