Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?
British officers used the song to call colonials fools who thought a feather made them soldiers. The fools kept the song. In March 1776, as the British left Boston, American musicians played it at the retreat.
The score is for that turn. A people that can wear the insult has started to be a people. It is not a hymn, and it is not trying to be one.

The eight
Industry
9/10
A tune and a joke. The making is older than the war. The keeping is the American part.
Household
9/10
A street song. Not a lullaby, not a vow.
Piety
9/10
No prayer in it. A feather in the hat is the whole theology.
Courage
9/10
They took the insult and marched under it. That is nerve with a grin.
Republic
9/10
A people laughing at the army that named them, in the army's own tune.
Temperance
9/10
A joke, fast enough to march to. Not a rot.
Truth
9/10
The mockery is admitted by being stolen. They do not pretend they invented the sneer.
Stewardship
9/10
A town still knows it. A child could bang a pot and be in the country.
Live historicallySing one verse. Then say who the joke was on, and who kept it.
