This Old House

65Worth an evening.

Skill, a building, and no one pretending the work is a personality. Keep it.

The review

The show's radical idea is that a house is a physical object and a person can learn how it works. Plumbing, timber, a window that was done wrong in 1920. The homeowners are not the stars. The trades are. A boy who has only seen work as a meeting can watch one episode and see a different authority: the person who can keep the water on the correct side of the wall.

A family can have it on. It will not raise your children. It will keep you from the lie that maintenance is beneath a serious life. Maintenance is one of the few serious lives.

The glance

Household and Piety and Courage are the thin ones.

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this

The Civil War

76 instead of 65

The Civil War is still a documentary show, and it scores 76 instead of 65. What you gain is courage: The courage is specific and terrible, and not only on one side.

The eight

10
Industry
The trade is the entire show. Mastery is visible.
4
Household
The house is a client's. The respect is for the building as a place people live.
3
Piety
No creed. A real reverence for doing it right.
4
Courage
The courage is cutting into a wall and standing behind the repair.
5
Republic
A town of suppliers and inspectors. Not a sermon about community.
9
Temperance
No appetite. The pleasure is the fitted joint.
8
Truth
They show the mistake and the correction.
9
Stewardship
A house that will outlast the episode is the whole point.

Pass it on

Arthur

65Worth an evening.

Ordinary school days, ordinary fault, a family that is still there at supper. A good long habit.

The review

Arthur is not exciting, which is why a child can grow on it. The conflicts are the size of a classroom. D.W. is selfish and four, and the family does not organize itself around her tantrum. Binky, Francine, and the Brain are particular. The best episodes end with a person changed a little, not crowned.

Put it on for the grade-school years. Sit for one and ask what Arthur had to admit. That question is the whole curriculum.

The glance

Piety is the thin one.

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Bluey

78 instead of 65

Bluey is still a children show, and it scores 78 instead of 65. What you gain is industry: Parents have jobs.

The eight

5
Industry
A father who runs a catering business, a mother who works. Homework is real.
8
Household
Parents with authority, a grandmother, a sister. Arguments end with someone still in the house.
4
Piety
No worship. Conscience is a teacher, a parent, or a friend who is done with you.
6
Courage
The brave act is usually an apology or a try at a thing you are bad at.
8
Republic
Elwood is a town: a library, a school, a shop, a teacher with a name.
7
Temperance
The portion is a problem a child can finish before dinner.
7
Truth
Someone was wrong. The episode is not over until that is said.
7
Stewardship
Manners, reading, and how to lose a friend and get her back.
