13: The Musical

49Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The party is the idol again. The songs are fun. The rite is trying to climb out from under them.

The review

Evan Goldman moves, his parents have split, and he tries to buy a new life with invitations. The musical is cheerful about the scheme and, late, ashamed of it in the way these stories are ashamed: a song, a correction, a party that still happens. Pair it with the Sandler bat mitzvah film already on the desk. Same lesson, more rhymes.

Fine at thirteen. Ask what the ceremony is for if the popular boy does not come.

The Last House

49Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The test is whether they stay a family. The film is more interested in the lock.

The review

The Delgados cannot open their own door. Whatever is keeping them in, the moral fact inside the house is ordinary and severe: four people, dwindling food, and the question of who stays kind when the cupboard is the plot. A thriller will always be tempted to spend that fact on the thing at the glass. Stay with the people if you stay at all.

Not for children. If you are grown and you put it on, ask when it ends whether you would have portioned fairly. Then check the actual cupboard, which is not a metaphor.
