The Deer Hunter

70Worth an evening.

A steel town, a wedding, and friends the war does not send home the same.

The review

Give the wedding as much time as the war. Steel-town friends before, during, and after Vietnam. A hunt. A bar. The ones who wait are part of the story, not a lobby the film passes through on the way to combat. The town is the subject. One of them does not come back the same.

Adult. I will not describe the captivity, and you should not either if you are telling someone whether to watch. This is not a mission picture. It is a place that sent friends and then had to live with the return it actually got. The mill and the people waiting are what the fighting spends. Watch for them. A highlight reel of endurance would be a different, worse movie.

The glance

Piety is the thin one.

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this

Master and Commander

81 instead of 70

Master and Commander is still a war film, and it scores 81 instead of 70. What you gain is stewardship: The point of the voyage is that the crew comes home, and the sea is respected.

The eight

8
Industry
A steel town is the subject, and the mill work is the life before the war.
8
Household
A wedding and the people who wait are half the story, not a pause.
6
Piety
The wedding is a vow they thought the town would still be holding.
7
Courage
They go, and one of them is not brought back the same.
8
Republic
The town sent friends and owes the ones who wait an honest return.
6
Temperance
A hunt and a bar sit in ordinary life; the war is not sold as fun.
7
Truth
The war does not bring one of them back the same, and the film says so.
6
Stewardship
What remains is the town and the people who wait, changed and still the subject.

12 Years a Slave

70Worth an evening.

Keep it for adults who can bear it. A free man, a paper, a wife and children, and a country that called the theft law.

The review

Solomon Northup was a citizen of New York with a wife, children, and a trade, and the United States allowed him to be sold. The film's discipline is to stay with the time. It does not offer a white savior as the meaning, though a man finally carries a letter. The meaning is the letter, the name, and the fact that the law had to be contradicted by a person willing to act. Patsey's suffering is not there for our refinement. It is there because leaving her out would be another theft.

Adults. Do not put it on as a background of importance. If you watch it, watch it through, and do not follow it with a cheerful picture the same night. The charge is not a feeling. The charge is to know that a legal theft is still a theft, and to be the person who carries the letter.
