The Sunday pulpit

90Sit with it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

For many houses, Sunday was the news, and the news had a conscience in it.

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

In a lot of towns the Sunday sermon was the only long speech a child heard from an adult who was not his father. The text was scripture. The application was often the war, the king, or the neighbor who had gone over.

The score is high on piety because the room was built for it. It is not a claim that every minister told the truth about the week.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

A weekly labor of reading, writing, and standing up in front of the town.

  2. Household

    9/10

The household is in the pews. Children are not excused from the hour.

  3. Piety

    9/10

Reverence is the room. The soul is assumed, not joked about.

  4. Courage

    9/10

A minister who named the war from the pulpit could lose the town or the army's patience.

  5. Republic

    9/10

The neighbor is present. What is owed is said where he can hear it.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Appetite is not the liturgy. The hour is slow on purpose.

  7. Truth

    9/10

A text is read, then applied. A partisan sermon can still bend the text.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

The same people, every week, taught to stay for something longer than a notice.

Cinderella

90Sit with it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The work and the test are worth keeping. The prize is a court, which is thinner than a house.

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

This is the old tale, not a studio picture. Cinderella is the one who works. Her name in the story is an insult for the ash she sleeps in. The ball is not the moral. The moral is that the house has been using her, and a true claim can be tested.

Do not teach a child that a party and a stranger are the rescue. Teach the two parts that hold: do the work, and do not pretend to be someone you are not when the test comes. The court at the end is a thinner reward than the story thinks.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

She does the housework the others will not do. The work is why she is who she is.

  2. Household

    9/10

A dead mother, a cruel stepmother, sisters as a warning. The marriage is a rescue.

  3. Piety

    9/10

The godmother is wonder. The older telling still carries a mother's care, not a sermon.

  4. Courage

    9/10

She goes to the ball against the house that keeps her down.

  5. Republic

    9/10

The reward is a court, not a town. Rank is the prize.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Midnight is a limit, and she keeps it.

  7. Truth

    9/10

The shoe fits one person. A claim is tested instead of announced.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

In the older telling she forgives the sisters. A house is gained. It is not built.
