Stargate Atlantis

56Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

A crew, a post, and a problem every week. Competent adventure. Not a moral education, and not a waste.

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

Atlantis is the cleaner neighbor of the Sunday storefront: people who are good at something, far from home, trying not to wreck the people they meet or the city they were given. It will not teach a thirteen-year-old how to live. It will not teach him that hell is a musical or that a stepbrother is a plot. On this particular morning that is a relative good.

Fine for a teen who likes a team. Prefer the episodes where the argument is whether the powerful thing should be used at all.

The eight

  1. Industry

    7/10

Scientists and soldiers with a job. The city has to be fed, powered, and defended.

  2. Household

    4/10

A team that functions as a household. The people back home are mostly a radio call.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Wonder at a gate. The ancients are a technology, not a god.

  4. Courage

    7/10

They go through. Showing up is the virtue the show actually has.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A crew under orders, arguing about the orders. A small polity.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Sci-fi violence. Little of the sexual cruelty in the rows above it.

  7. Truth

    6/10

A problem has a mechanism. They would rather find it than vibe about it.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

Skill and a post, handed from one commander to the next.

Alexa & Katie

56Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

Friendship as a duty, not a mood. One of the better shows on the children's row.

After the credits

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Alexa is sick and does not want the year to be about being sick. Katie helps her hide it, which is not a perfect plan, and the show is honest enough to let the hiding cost them. The mothers are not fools. The friendship is the plot, and for once the plot is a duty: show up, keep the secret only as long as it protects rather than isolates, tell the truth when the truth is due.

Good beside a parent for an older child. Ask afterward what Katie owed Alexa, and what she owed the adults. Both answers matter.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

School is still school. They are trying to stay in it while one of them is ill.

  2. Household

    7/10

Mothers are present and competent. A friend stays. That is a household of a kind.

  3. Piety

    4/10

Illness is handled with care. The show is not pious, and it is not mocking.

  4. Courage

    7/10

Katie carries a secret that costs her, for someone who needs the year to be normal.

  5. Republic

    5/10

A school full of other people who are not only an audience.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

Teen romance wanders in. It does not eat the illness.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The sickness is not a twist. They live with it.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

What they are keeping is a friendship through a hard year, which is a thing you can hand on.

Live historicallyShow up this week for a friend who is having a hard year. Do a practical thing, not a speech.
