Pass it on
Shenandoah
71Worth an evening.
Worth an evening. He wants his family left alone. The war does not honor the want, and neither does conscience.
The review
He is a widower with a farm in Virginia and a principle: the war is other people's, because he built the farm and the children himself and nobody is going to spend them. The principle sounds like independence. It is also a refusal to see the war that is already in the county. Then his youngest is taken, mistaken for a soldier, and the principle has to get on a horse. One of his daughters marries a Confederate. The marriage does not convert the father. It complicates the table.
This was a large gross of 1965 and it is better than most of the larger ones. I would watch it with a house that has started to talk as if the family's fence were a complete morality. Ask what he owed the county before they took his boy. The film's answer is not tidy, and the prayer at the table is not a joke. A prayer that is not a deal is a rare sound in this decade's movies. Keep it.

The glance
Piety is the thin one.
Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
Consider this
Master and Commander
81 instead of 71
Master and Commander is still a war film, and it scores 81 instead of 71. What you gain is courage: Courage here is procedure plus nerve, not a speech.
The eight
- 8Industry
The farm is the work, and the work is why he thinks he owes the war nothing.
- 8Household
A widower and his children are the whole principle. The principle is tested by name.
- 6Piety
He prays a blunt prayer and does not pretend the prayer is a deal.
- 7Courage
He goes looking for a son when staying home was the plan he preferred.
- 6Republic
Neutrality is the politics. The film does not let it survive contact with a kidnapping.
- 7Temperance
He wants to be left alone, which is a restraint, until it becomes a blindness.
- 7Truth
The war reaches the porch anyway. The film will not grant him the exemption he announces.
- 8Stewardship
A house inherits a father who learns that 'mine' was never a wall around the children.
