Pass it on
Sergeant York and His People
70Worth an evening.
A plain record of an Appalachian marksman who tried to stay out of the killing and then did not miss.
The review
This is not the movie. It is the early telling, close to the man and pleased with him. Read it for the order of the facts: the fights, the conversion, the objection, the draft, the Argonne, the refusal to live as a show. The piety is not a preface. It is why he almost did not go.
Use it beside the film. Where the book is proud, ask what it skips. Where it is specific about the valley, keep that. A people is a valley before it is a medal.

The glance
Republic is the thin one.
Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this
Foxfire
78 instead of 70
Foxfire is still a history book, and it scores 78 instead of 70. What you gain is industry: Hog dressing, cabins, looms, rifles, and the order of the work.
The eight
- 7Industry
A farm, a blacksmith life, and a man who would rather plow.
- 7Household
His mother and the valley are the people he answers to.
- 8Piety
The conversion is the hinge. He objects to the war because of it.
- 8Courage
He goes anyway, once the appeal fails, and does the terrible work well.
- 6Republic
The country claims him. The book is proud of that in a 1922 way.
- 6Temperance
Drink and fighting are what he puts down. The war is what he is handed.
- 7Truth
It is a hero book. It still keeps the objection, not only the medals.
- 7Stewardship
He comes home to the valley instead of becoming a professional famous man.
