Nyad

63Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

A true story about a will that will not retire. The record is disputed. The friendship is not.

After the credits

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Annette Bening plays Nyad as a person who has already been famous and is unbearable in the service of one more attempt. Jodie Foster's Bonnie is the moral center: the friend who can say no and still gets in the boat. The Cuba-to-Florida swim is a fact people argue about. Believe the film on the effort and the friendship. Do not treat the credits as a settled plaque.

Strong for thirteen. The body in pain is the point, not a thrill. Ask whether a friend owes you the boat, and what you owe the friend if you are the one rowing.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

Training, navigation, a body that keeps being asked. Work is the whole film.

  2. Household

    7/10

Not a marriage. A friendship with the weight of one, and it is allowed to fray.

  3. Piety

    3/10

The sea is awesome. She does not bow to anything but the finish.

  4. Courage

    9/10

She gets back in the water after the failure.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A crew on a boat. The public is an argument she starts later.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Obsession is the risk. The film does not call it balance.

  7. Truth

    6/10

It is honest that she is difficult. Less honest, some say, about the swim itself.

  8. Stewardship

    6/10

A late life still spent on a hard thing. That is worth showing a teenager.

Don't Say Good Luck

63Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

A daughter and a sick mother. The songs are the sugar. The staying is the story.

This phone

Set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

After the credits

Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves?

Sophie is sixteen, the school is putting on Waitress, and her mother is sick again. The standard has seen this shape before and it still matters: a child who wants a life of her own, and a parent who may not be there to see it. The musical numbers are the part Netflix would like you to clip. The kitchen, the ride, the ordinary hour after the news — that is the measure.

An older child can watch this with you. Say, when it is over, that talent is not the favor she did her mother. Staying in the house was. Do not use it to start a conversation you are not prepared to finish honestly.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Rehearsal is work. She has to learn the part, not only feel it.

  2. Household

    8/10

The whole film is a girl who will not leave a mother who is ill, and a house trying to keep its shape.

  3. Piety

    5/10

Illness is not a punchline. Awe is quiet, if it is there at all.

  4. Courage

    7/10

She gets on the stage, and she stays in the hard room at home.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A school is the public. The town is mostly a hallway.

  6. Temperance

    6/10

Sentiment is thick. It is not cruel, and it is not a romance selling itself as depth.

  7. Truth

    7/10

A mother tells the truth about being sick. The film does not dress the prognosis up as a twist you are meant to enjoy.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

What she is trying to hand her daughter is a way to keep going.
