Mom

65Then talk about it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The subject is one of the best on television. The jokes are not for a child in the room.

After the credits

Is appetite shown and then put down, or are you being trained to want the next one?

Allison Janney and Anna Faris play women who have already done the damage and are trying not to do the next day of it. The writers built a show about AA and then dressed it as a network sitcom, which means the truth arrives wearing a dirty joke. The truth is still the truth. A thirteen-year-old is the wrong age for the costume.

Adults, if you can stand the mouth. Do not leave it running because the title sounds soft. If addiction is a fact in your family, there are plainer ways to talk about it than this.

The eight

  1. Industry

    6/10

Waitressing, meetings, the daily labor of not picking up the drink.

  2. Household

    8/10

A broken house trying, in public, to become a house again.

  3. Piety

    5/10

The meeting is a confession. It is the closest thing the show has to a church, and it is not nothing.

  4. Courage

    8/10

Sobriety, a day at a time, is courage with no audience.

  5. Republic

    6/10

A circle of women who answer for each other.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

The theme is temperance. The dialogue is not. Sex jokes are the house style.

  7. Truth

    8/10

Almost nobody is allowed a glamorous lie about the bottle.

  8. Stewardship

Arthur

65Then talk about it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

Ordinary school days, ordinary fault, a family that is still there at supper. A good long habit.

After the credits

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Arthur is not exciting, which is why a child can grow on it. The conflicts are the size of a classroom. D.W. is selfish and four, and the family does not organize itself around her tantrum. Binky, Francine, and the Brain are particular. The best episodes end with a person changed a little, not crowned.

Put it on for the grade-school years. Sit for one and ask what Arthur had to admit. That question is the whole curriculum.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

A father who runs a catering business, a mother who works. Homework is real.

  2. Household

    8/10

Parents with authority, a grandmother, a sister. Arguments end with someone still in the house.

  3. Piety

    4/10

No worship. Conscience is a teacher, a parent, or a friend who is done with you.

  4. Courage

    6/10

The brave act is usually an apology or a try at a thing you are bad at.

  5. Republic

    8/10

Elwood is a town: a library, a school, a shop, a teacher with a name.

  6. Temperance

    7/10

The portion is a problem a child can finish before dinner.

  7. Truth

    7/10

Someone was wrong. The episode is not over until that is said.

  8. Stewardship

    7/10

Manners, reading, and how to lose a friend and get her back.

Live historicallyAt supper, let each child say one thing they got wrong today. Include yourself.
