Pass it on
The Leatherstocking Tales
66Worth an evening.
The frontier myth, unapologetic about settlement, and honest that the woodsman does not fit the town he opened.
The review
These are not neutral histories. Cooper takes the side of the settler civilization and still gives the woodsman a grief about what settlement destroys. That double sight is more useful than a later film that picks only one.
Start with The Pioneers or The Last of the Mohicans and say, out loud, that a people can be glad of the town and still owe the truth about who was already there. The score is for the inheritance, not for a clean conscience.

The glance
Household is the thin one.
Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this
Where the Red Fern Grows
78 instead of 66
Where the Red Fern Grows is still a novel book, and it scores 78 instead of 66. What you gain is household: His parents let him want a hard thing and then help him carry it.
The eight
- 7Industry
Hunting, guiding, and war are the work. The town that follows is farms and law.
- 5Household
Natty has no wife and no heir. The families are the ones who come behind him.
- 5Piety
Providence is assumed. The novels are not a catechism.
- 8Courage
He goes into the fight and the forest when the settlers will not.
- 7Republic
The argument is whose law governs the woods. Cooper does not pretend there is none.
- 6Temperance
The wilderness is not a resort. Waste and cruelty are named, unevenly.
- 7Truth
He writes the pioneer as he was argued over, not as a mascot.
- 8Stewardship
The tales are how Americans first told themselves the story of taking the land.
