A History of New York
44Leave it.
The Dutch founding as a joke that still remembers names, land, and a people. Comedy, not a chronicle.

The review
Read a chapter so you know where the Dutch-American myth came from. Do not read it as the settlement. Irving is laughing at a people he also claims, which is an old New York habit. The laughs are often good. They are a poor substitute for the patents, the churches, and the land records.
Pair it with one serious page about New Netherland, or it will own the whole memory.

The glance
Industry and Household and Piety and Courage are the thin ones.
Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
The eight
- 4Industry
Governors and land. The work is buried under the joke.
- 4Household
Households appear as types. The joke needs them ridiculous.
- 3Piety
Religion is part of the costume.
- 3Courage
No one is asked to be brave. They are asked to be amusing.
- 5Republic
It is a civic myth for New York, told by a New Yorker who knows it is a myth.
- 5Temperance
The excess is verbal. It does not corrupt so much as it floats.
- 5Truth
He signals the fiction. Readers who want a history will be misled anyway.
- 6Stewardship
It fixed the Dutch colony in the American imagination, which is a kind of keeping.
