The Hunger Games
A girl volunteers for a televised fight to the death so her sister will not have to go.
Find on IMDbKindle
The volunteer is real. The game is the product. Not for a young reader.
The first chapter is a girl who hunts and loves her sister. That girl is worth meeting. The book then does what the Capitol does: it puts children in a spectacle and asks you to care who wins. You will care. That is the problem, not a defense.
An older teen can read the trap and name it. A younger one will practice the arena. Do not hand it down because it was talked about as a dystopia. Dystopia is not a free pass.
Live historically
If a teen reads it, read the first killing with them and ask who the page was entertaining.

The eight
Industry
7/10
Katniss feeds her family by hunting. That part is solid.
Household
7/10
She takes her sister's place. The romance is a strategy she resents.
Piety
2/10
Nothing is sacred. The cameras are the god.
Courage
8/10
She volunteers, then has to kill to get home.
Republic
4/10
The districts are a warning. The pleasure of the book is still the arena.
Temperance
3/10
Violence is the engine, described so you keep turning pages.
Truth
6/10
The Capitol is a lie, and she knows it. The show still needs her to perform.
Stewardship
5/10
She wants her sister to live. The series will spend that want.
