Halloween

46Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The fear is about a duty: she is in charge of the house. The sequels turned it into a sport. This one is still the duty. Not a treat.

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

John Carpenter made a film about a suburb that stopped watching its own street, and a girl who was left in charge. That is a serious idea. He also made a shape you were meant to want to see again, and the culture took the invitation for forty years. Prime's horror row is that invitation, still open, on a Sunday morning.

Not for thirteen as a classic to get through. If the house is older and watches the first one only, talk about the babysitting, not the mask. Stop before the series teaches you the mask is the hero.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

Babysitting is a job. Laurie does it while the film punishes everyone who didn't.

  2. Household

    4/10

Other people's children, asleep. That is the stake, and the film knows it at the start.

  3. Piety

    2/10

All Hallows as a hunt. No older meaning survives.

  4. Courage

    8/10

She goes back into the house.

  5. Republic

    5/10

A street where the neighbors do not look out. That failure is part of the horror.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

The knife is the camera's interest. One film was already enough.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The Shape is not given a sad speech. He is a ruin walking.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

What Laurie is protecting is not herself alone. The sequels forgot the children.

Back to the Outback

A journey home. The lesson about looks is plain, and the home is the right destination.

After the credits

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

Back to the Outback is an escape home, which is a better plot than an escape into fame. The ugliness lesson is delivered more than once, and children will not miss it. The part to say aloud is the destination: they are not trying to be liked by the crowd that feared them. They are trying to get back to a place where they can live. Fine for a family evening.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

The zoo is a job done badly. The wild is where they have to learn to live.

  2. Household

    4/10

A made family of the rejected. They are trying to reach a real habitat.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Being seen truly is the hope. It is not quite worship of being seen.

  4. Courage

    6/10

They cross a country that can kill them.

  5. Republic

    4/10

A park that used them. A wilderness that does not.

  6. Temperance

    5/10

Jokes about ugliness, aimed at the people who flinched.

  7. Truth

    6/10

The fear of them was ignorant, and the film says so without pretending they are harmless in every way.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

What they want to hand on is a way home.
