Pass it on
Fargo
40Leave it.
The manners are observed with a cold eye. The film enjoys the blood. It is not a portrait to hand on.
Take controlThis scores 40. Fargo cannot be blocked by name on this shelf. The lock is the phone. Block it
The review
People put Fargo on this shelf because the accents are theirs. That is not enough. The film sees a real reserve and a real politeness and then uses them as the setup for a woodchipper. Marge's decency is the one thing worth keeping, and it is not the reason the movie was bought.
Do not screen it as Scandinavian heritage. If someone in the house thinks it is the home picture, ask them what it teaches a child about the people they come from.

The glance
Household and Piety and Temperance and Stewardship are the thin ones.
Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

Consider this
The Silence of the Lambs
49 instead of 40
The Silence of the Lambs is still a crime film, and it scores 49 instead of 40. What you gain is courage: She goes down the hall.
The eight
- 5Industry
A dealership, a police job, a crime that is mostly incompetence.
- 4Household
Marge is a married adult. The criminals' households are already rotten.
- 2Piety
No moral order above the joke, except her decency, which the film likes and isolates.
- 6Courage
She does the job without bravado.
- 5Republic
A small-city police force still functions. The movie is not interested in the town.
- 2Temperance
The violence is a punchline. That fails the measure.
- 6Truth
The politeness is real. Using it only as irony is a half-truth.
- 2Stewardship
Nothing is left but a case file and a mood.
