Pass it on
The Crossing
50Watch it awake.
The border and the work are real. The book is a long grief, not a homestead.
The review
McCarthy knows the country and the work. He will not give you a farm that holds. The wolf, the brother, and the ruined family are told without a speech about resilience. That honesty is why it is here, under the Scots-Irish and border heading, and why it is a poor evening if what you need is a pattern to copy.
Read it if you are grown and can stand a book that refuses a moral in the last chapter. Do not hand it to a teenager as the story of our people. It is the story of a boy the border used up.

The glance
Household and Piety and Republic and Temperance and Stewardship are the thin ones.
Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this
The Giver
60 instead of 50
The Giver is still a novel book, and it scores 60 instead of 50. What you gain is stewardship: He carries memory for people who did not ask, and then he tries to give it back.
The eight
- 7Industry
Horses, traps, and a road that is all labor.
- 3Household
The family he leaves is destroyed offstage. He does not build another.
- 4Piety
He meets priests and hears parables. Comfort is not offered.
- 8Courage
He keeps a promise to an animal at a cost no one will thank him for.
- 3Republic
The country across the line is violence and chance, not a town.
- 4Temperance
Suffering is the climate. The book does not teach a limit.
- 8Truth
It does not sweeten the border or the boy's mistakes.
- 3Stewardship
Nothing he carries home is a house the next child can live in.
