The Giver
A boy is appointed to carry the memory his community has drugged away.

Worth an evening for a reader who can ask what the calm is hiding.
The community is kind, clean, and killing babies and the old behind a euphemism. Jonas's courage is not a battle. It is refusing the calm. That maps onto a house more closely than a dystopia usually does: the danger is a life with no grief and no music.
It is short, and the ending does not explain itself. Let it stay unexplained for a night. Do not rush to the sequels.
