Boston and New York could be shut. Hartford was not. The Courant is the score for a paper that kept a town in the war when the famous presses could not.

A thirteen-year-old in the countryside met the year this way, if he met a paper at all: late, copied, and read by somebody else.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

A paper kept on a regular press, week after week, is a trade.

  2. Household

    9/10

It arrived in houses that were not in Philadelphia or Boston.

  3. Piety

    9/10

A civic sheet, not a catechism.

  4. Courage

    9/10

Printing through a war, away from the army, is a quieter nerve.

  5. Republic

    9/10

An inland town still owed the argument.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Less heat than the Spy. Still a side.

  7. Truth

    9/10

It copied, and it reported. Copying was how truth traveled, and how error did.

Cinderella

90Sit with it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The work and the test are worth keeping. The prize is a court, which is thinner than a house.

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

This is the old tale, not a studio picture. Cinderella is the one who works. Her name in the story is an insult for the ash she sleeps in. The ball is not the moral. The moral is that the house has been using her, and a true claim can be tested.

Do not teach a child that a party and a stranger are the rescue. Teach the two parts that hold: do the work, and do not pretend to be someone you are not when the test comes. The court at the end is a thinner reward than the story thinks.

The eight

  1. Industry

    9/10

She does the housework the others will not do. The work is why she is who she is.

  2. Household

    9/10

A dead mother, a cruel stepmother, sisters as a warning. The marriage is a rescue.

  3. Piety

    9/10

The godmother is wonder. The older telling still carries a mother's care, not a sermon.

  4. Courage

    9/10

She goes to the ball against the house that keeps her down.

  5. Republic

    9/10

The reward is a court, not a town. Rank is the prize.

  6. Temperance

    9/10

Midnight is a limit, and she keeps it.

  7. Truth

    9/10

The shoe fits one person. A claim is tested instead of announced.

  8. Stewardship

    9/10

In the older telling she forgives the sisters. A house is gained. It is not built.
