The Eight Measures · version 1.0
Does it leave you more fit?
Stated 8 November 2026. A rubric with a date can be checked. A heading cannot.
We do not review the story. We ask what it does to you — does it leave you more fit to keep a house, tell the truth, and be useful? — and then we show the reasoning so you can check us. The same eight marks apply to any story with anyone in it. The number is a reader’s answer, not an award from an authority.
What the question is not
- Is it good? Taste. A recommendation engine already answers that, and it does not ask whether you should watch it.
- Do I like it? A mood. It does not leave you any different on Tuesday.
- Is it moral? A censor. The moment the desk issues a blessing, it has become the authority it refused to be.
- Is it well made? Craft. A beautiful picture can still leave you worse to your neighbors.
How a mark is given
- The reader has watched or read the whole work. If not, the title stays not yet scored. A blank is not a low number.
- Each measure is 0 to 10. Read the scale out loud the first time. A house that has not agreed on it will split on noise.
- 10, the story loves this, and you walk away more able. 7, it is there and taken seriously, not the joke. 5, thin or split, and the line should say which. 3, the story knows the thing and treats it as optional, naive, or in the way. 0, the story teaches the opposite, and enjoys teaching it.
- We do not score blood, and we do not score party. The eight measures apply to any story with anyone in it. A person’s ancestry or politics is never a mark. If a review can be predicted from who is in the work, the review has failed.
- Industry. The plain sheet says work. Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Household. The plain sheet says a home. Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Piety. The plain sheet says faith. Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Courage. The plain sheet says courage. Does anyone risk something they would miss, or is it only noise? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Republic. The plain sheet says freedom. Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Temperance. The plain sheet says self-control. Is appetite shown and then put down, or are you being trained to want the next one? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Truth. The plain sheet says telling the truth. Does a promise still hold, and does a lie come with a bill? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Stewardship. The plain sheet says what you leave behind. What is left for the people who come after — a place, a craft, a name? The test is what the story loves, excuses, and leaves a person more likely to do.
- Add the eight. Divide by eight. Multiply by ten. That is the number. 80 and above is fit to keep. 65 is worth an evening and a conversation. 45 means watch it awake, or not at all. Under 45, it will not make you better.
- The desk’s number is one reader who showed the eight lines. It is not a crowd, and it is not a median we have not collected. A house’s own marks stay on their device.
How a mark is contested
Write the title, the measure, and the scene. A mark moves only if the scene shows the desk misread what the story loves, excuses, or leaves a person more likely to do. A loud room does not move it. The answer goes on the review in public, or the desk says it has not looked again. On paper, write [email protected].
A sheet left a building
If a school, a church, a co-op, a library, or a cinema put the unbranded sheet in people’s hands, tell us the institution, the town, and how many copies. Not the names of the people. Households are the count. Traffic is not. On paper, write [email protected].
The log
Version 1.0, 8 November 2026. The eight questions, the bands, and this method, stated so a house can check the work. Nothing before this date is a version. It was a heading.
If a review could lose its last paragraph and nobody would notice, it is not answering the question. If a score can be defended only by pointing at the picture, and not at the life it leaves, it is a verdict. Send it back.
