A remake is justified when the audience will no longer read the book. This one is severe enough to be honest and short enough to be watched. It is still a reduction. The parish, the arguments, and the particular Swedish poverty are thinner on screen than on Moberg's page.
Watch it, then put the novel in the house. If you only watch it, you have the pictures and not the people.
