Pass it on
Seven Samurai
79Worth an evening.
Long and violent, and honest that the farmers live while most of the seven do not.
The review
Clear the evening. It is long on purpose. Farmers hire seven masterless samurai to defend the harvest from bandits. The men train the village. The battle comes. Most of the seven die. The farmers live. The fighting is violent, and I won't describe wounds. Older teens who can sit still, not a crowd that wants the hits cut together.
The samurai and the farmers do not become one people. I kept waiting for the warm ending where everybody is family, and the film declines. The hired men pay in deaths. The village keeps the crop and the living. That split felt more honest than a speech about unity. What is left for the people is their harvest, not a new set of bosses. I was tired and glad I had stayed.

The glance
Household is the thin one.
Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

The eight
- 9Industry
The harvest is the farmers' work; the samurai's work is keeping bandits off it.
- 6Household
The village eats from that harvest, even with no romance at the center.
- 6Piety
They see the job through, and duty does not pretend they are one family.
- 9Courage
Most of the seven die for a crop that will never be theirs.
- 9Republic
The village hires a defense, and the fighters do not keep the town.
- 7Temperance
The battle costs lives instead of coaching you to want the next fight.
- 8Truth
It refuses the lie that samurai and farmers become one people.
- 9Stewardship
The farmers keep the harvest and their lives; the dead do not take the village.
