Pass it on
The Scarlet Letter
69Worth an evening.
A severe book about a real sin, a public lie, and a town that confuses punishment with repentance.
The review
Hawthorne is hard on the Puritans and harder on the man who preaches repentance while hiding. Hester's competence does not make the adultery small. The town that needs her shame for its own entertainment is not a congregation. That distinction is the book's use.
Read it as a warning about secret clergy and about a public that would rather have a marked woman than a repentant man. Do not read it as a brief for tearing the mark off every sin.

The glance
Household is the thin one.
Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

Consider this
Little Women
80 instead of 69
Little Women is still a novel book, and it scores 80 instead of 69. What you gain is household: Marmee is a mother with a standard.
The eight
- 6Industry
Hester's needle keeps her alive. The town lives by other people's shame.
- 5Household
A child is born. The father will not claim her until the end.
- 8Piety
Sin is not a lifestyle. The minister's hiddenness is the deeper fault.
- 7Courage
She stays in the town that marked her and raises the child in public.
- 6Republic
The law is real. The town's appetite for a sinner is not the same as justice.
- 7Temperance
Passion is not excused. The book shows the bill, including the child.
- 9Truth
The scarlet letter is a fact. The minister's clean reputation is the lie.
- 7Stewardship
Pearl is what the sin left. She is not a symbol you can put down.
