Peyton Place

A phenomenon of the decade. The product is the secret, and the secret is almost always a bed.

The review
Twice a week, a town in New England opened its doors and the country came to see who was lying to a spouse. It was a phenomenon, one of the first prime-time soaps to make the secret itself the product. The performances can be serious. The seriousness is in the service of the next revelation, and the revelation is almost always that a marriage was a cover. I am not going to inventory the beds.
A house does not need this as a document unless someone is studying how a schedule teaches an audience to wait for betrayal. The ratings were high. The ratings are the audience, not the judgment. Leave it off. If it is already a memory someone in the room is defending, the defense has to be better than 'everyone watched.' Everyone watched a great many things that did not make the week better.

The glance
Industry and Household and Piety and Courage and Republic and Temperance and Truth and Stewardship are the thin ones.
Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
The eight
- 3Industry
People have jobs. The jobs are an excuse to get them into the same room.
- 2Household
Marriage is the thing the plot is trying to get around.
- 2Piety
No one is answerable. A secret is the highest value in town.
- 3Courage
Characters take social risks. The risks are for an affair, not for a neighbor.
- 3Republic
A town is the public, and the show's interest is in pulling the town apart for the hour.
- 2Temperance
Appetite is the episode. Restraint is what the characters fail at, and the show enjoys the failure.
- 4Truth
The town is full of lies, and the show tells you so. It also sells you the next lie.
- 2Stewardship
A house inherits a habit of waiting for the next betrayal, which is a poor evening.
