On My Block

46Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

The friendship is true. The neighborhood is not a sitcom. Too much gun and too much treasure-hunt for an unattended thirteen-year-old.

Set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

After the credits

Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?

Monse, Jamal, Ruby, and Cesar are specific, which is the show's credit, and a teenager can feel the difference between this and a high-school hallway built in Burbank. The debit is the RollerWorld money: a cartoon of gang cash that teaches the same lesson the streets are already teaching too well. Friendship is not a disinfectant.

If she is in it, watch the next episode in the room. Leave when the fortune becomes more interesting than the friend.

The eight

  1. Industry

    4/10

School is there. The plot would rather have a duffel bag.

  2. Household

    6/10

Friends who function as a household. Actual parents are uneven and present.

  3. Piety

    3/10

Little sacred. Loyalty is the only vow, and it gets expensive.

  4. Courage

    6/10

They go back for each other into streets that are not theoretical.

  5. Republic

    5/10

A block is a real unit. The show sometimes turns it into a board game.

  6. Temperance

    3/10

Sex, drugs, and violence are not guests. They live there.

  7. Truth

    6/10

It does not pretend the block is fine. The treasure plot pretends a fortune would help.

  8. Stewardship

    4/10

What it hands on is the friend. Also a romance with the stash.

Centaurworld

46Or leave it.Not an average of critics. Eight questions, one house.

A serious horse and a silly world. The show knows the difference, and then it sings too long.

After the credits

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

Centaurworld puts a horse who knows what a war is into a world that would rather sing. When the show remembers that contrast, it is sharper than the rest of this row. When it forgets, it is the musical. Older children. The question to ask is which world she owes, and whether a song is an answer.

The eight

  1. Industry

    5/10

She is a war horse with a duty. The new world keeps offering her a distraction.

  2. Household

    3/10

No herd of her own. A rider she is trying to return to.

  3. Piety

    3/10

The silly world worships comfort. She does not.

  4. Courage

    7/10

The errand is to get back to a fight that is not about her feelings.

  5. Republic

    4/10

One world is at war and the other refuses to hear it.

  6. Temperance

    4/10

Songs, many of them, some of them a real refusal of duty.

  7. Truth

    6/10

It tells the truth that a bright place can be a way of hiding.

  8. Stewardship

    5/10

What she wants to hand on is a return, not a musical.
