Pass it on
Household Saints
68Worth an evening.
The old house, the American kitchen, and a piety the grandchildren find embarrassing. That embarrassment is the subject.
The review
This is a small film and a precise one. The grandmother would be a joke in another movie. Here she is a fact the modern daughter has to live downstream of. Not every practice should survive. The film is fair about that. It is also fair that a people who keep nothing of the grandmother will not know what they are.
Watch it as a three-generation audit of your own kitchen.

The glance
Republic is the thin one.
Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
Consider this
Apollo 13
79 instead of 68
Apollo 13 is still a drama film, and it scores 79 instead of 68. What you gain is industry: Engineering under a clock.
The eight
- 6Industry
A butcher shop and a kitchen. The work thins as the generations Americanize.
- 8Household
Mothers and daughters are the line. Men are present and not the point.
- 8Piety
The grandmother's devotion is extreme and specific, not a vague spirituality.
- 6Courage
The youngest daughter's faith costs her a normal life. The film does not sneer first.
- 5Republic
The neighborhood is the polity, then the neighborhood fades.
- 6Temperance
Superstition and devotion sit in the same kitchen. The film can tell them apart, barely.
- 8Truth
It is honest that assimilation felt like a gain and was also a loss.
- 7Stewardship
The question is which practices survive the daughter who goes to college.
