Hatfields & McCoys

Blood loyalty shown as a fire that eats the households it claims to defend.

The review

This is on the shelf because it is a true thing that people like to romanticize. The series is better than the romance. It shows neighbors who share a mountain and then refuse to stop. Loyalty without a limit is not the household virtue. It is how a household ends.

Adults can watch it as a warning. Do not watch it as heritage night. If a son admires the stubbornness, stop and ask how many cousins the stubbornness buried.

The glance

Household and Piety and Republic and Temperance and Stewardship are the thin ones.

Is a marriage, a parent, or a child a real life here, or just a prop?

This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Call the Midwife

53 instead of 43

Call the Midwife is still a history show, and it scores 53 instead of 43. What you gain is stewardship: Every episode asks what will be left standing for the child who just took a breath.

The eight

6
Industry
Timber, farms, and a pig. The economies are real and then forgotten.
4
Household
Families are everything, which is why the sons are spent.
3
Piety
Church is nearby and rarely in charge.
6
Courage
Men go into gunfire for kin. The series is clear that this is also waste.
3
Republic
The law arrives late and is not trusted. The feud is the law they chose.
3
Temperance
Revenge is the plot engine. It is not condemned fast enough to help a boy watching.
7
Truth
The outline of the feud is historical. The emotion is stretched for television.
2
Stewardship
What gets handed on is a grave, not a trade.

The Gilded Age

43Leave it.

Manners, houses, and the fight over status. The old Dutch-descended names are scenery for a richer show.

The review

Watch one season if you want the feeling of old New York closing ranks against new money. Do not watch it as Dutch-American history. The Dutch past is a pedigree the characters mention. The show is about rooms, clothes, and the pleasure of exclusion. Exclusion can be a people's way of lasting. Here it is mostly a plot.

Pretty, long, and thin. Not a hearth series.

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

The Diplomat

55 instead of 43

The Diplomat is still a drama show, and it scores 55 instead of 43. What you gain is courage: She walks into rooms that can start wars.
