Pass it on
Goodbye, Mr. Chips
80Living historically.
He gives the years to other people's boys, and the marriage that opened him doesn't get to stay.
The review
Most pictures about a teacher want a speech near the end. This one wants the years. A shy man at an English public school spends his life with other people's boys. He marries, briefly, a woman who opens him. She dies. He stays. Robert Donat. A house can watch it. I didn't need a louder moral than the fact that he doesn't leave the work.
The marriage is a real life, and it is short. Generations of boys are the household he actually has. He risks the closed way he was living when he lets her in, then he stays through the long stretch without her. I would put this on when you are tired of loud duty. It is gentle. It is also a whole job, which gentle films sometimes fake and this one keeps.

Keep Goodbye, Mr. Chips in the record.

Live Historic number 80. Yours can differ.
The glance
Piety is the thin one.
Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
Consider this
A Man for All Seasons
89 instead of 80
A Man for All Seasons is still a drama film, and it scores 89 instead of 80. What you gain is piety: Faith is the center, and it is not a mood.
The eight
- 9Industry
The school is the work of his life, and the boys are why the days count.
- 8Household
A brief marriage opens him; the boys, year after year, are the household he has.
- 7Piety
He could have closed up after she dies, and the conscience in him stays.
- 7Courage
He risks the shy life he had, then stays on after the wife who opened him.
- 8Republic
He owes the school and each wave of boys who pass through it.
- 8Temperance
A quiet life, and nothing in it trains you to want a flashier one.
- 8Truth
She dies and he stays; the long years are not dressed up as a romance.
