Pass it on
Evangeline
56Watch it awake.
A made poem that kept a real people from being forgotten. The sentiment is thick. The exile is true.
The review
Read it as a memorial, not as the history. The Acadians were expelled, and many of them became the Louisiana people. Longfellow's lovers are a way of making a newspaper reader care. Caring is not nothing. It is not the same as knowing the ships, the parishes, and the names.
Read a section aloud so the children hear that this country contains exiles who were already European and already here before the later myth of arrival.

The glance
Industry is the thin one.
Does anyone here do a real job, and does that job matter?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.
The eight
- 4Industry
Wandering and searching, not a trade.
- 5Household
A betrothal that becomes a lifelong fidelity.
- 6Piety
Faith is what she walks with. It is Victorian faith, sincere and tidy.
- 7Courage
She does not give up the search.
- 5Republic
The expulsion is a people scattered by an empire. The poem takes their side.
- 5Temperance
Grief is prolonged on purpose. It is not obscene.
- 6Truth
The history is simplified into a love story. He did not pretend to be the archive.
- 7Stewardship
It made later Americans remember the Acadians at all.
