Children can watch this and understand that the interesting man is not the point. The fort is the point. That is the right order even when the history is smoothed and the fights are tidy. Say so. A pathfinder who never comes back to a wife and a wall is just a vagrant the show would not admit.

Use the early episodes. If a plot turns the Indians into a costume, stop and say that the real story was a collision of peoples, not a villain of the week.

The review

The useful part is the occupation: ordinary people deciding which uniform gets the truth. That is an American founding story the classroom usually tells as speeches. The series tells it as a county. It also pads the county with affairs and revenge until the ring is hard to see.

Adults can watch the early season for the ring and the cost of a lie told to a neighbor. Skip ahead when it becomes a costume thriller. Do not treat every invented quarrel as history.
