Pass it on
Cold Mountain
56Watch it awake.
The walk home is the right plot. The film is too full of cruelty to be a family picture.
The review
Ada learning to work is the scene that belongs on this shelf. Inman walking away from a war that has already used him up is the other. The rest is a long demonstration of how a countryside behaves when the men are gone and the worst men stay. You do not need every demonstration.
Adults only. If you watch it, do not let the cruelty become the memory. The memory is a woman who learned the farm and a man who decided home outranked the army.

The glance
Piety and Republic and Temperance are the thin ones.
Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Consider this
Glory
70 instead of 56
Glory is still a war film, and it scores 70 instead of 56. What you gain is republic: A republic arming men it had enslaved, and still cheating them.
The eight
- 7Industry
She keeps a farm with no man on it. That labor is the best of the film.
- 6Household
The marriage is mostly a promise. The farm becomes a household anyway.
- 4Piety
Faith appears as endurance more than worship.
- 8Courage
He keeps walking toward home through a country that will kill him for it.
- 4Republic
The home guard is lawlessness with a badge. The film is not confused about that.
- 3Temperance
The violence is thick. It is not needed at that length to make the point.
- 7Truth
Desertion is treated as a fact of that war, not a twist.
- 6Stewardship
What they want to save is a piece of ground and a life on it.
