Pass it on
Christy
74Worth an evening.
A mission book that respects the people she came to teach, and does not pretend the cove was quaint.
The review
Christy is an outsider, which is the risk of the book. Marshall keeps the cove's speech, pride, and violence from becoming a joke or a project. The teacher does not get to be right just because she came from farther off. That is the ethnic particularity the shelf is for: a mountain people with their own debts, not a backdrop for a girl's growth.
Read it with a daughter who likes a long story. Stop and talk when the cove's way and the mission's way both have a point.

The glance
Republic is the thin one.
Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves?
This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

Consider this
Little Women
80 instead of 74
Little Women is still a novel book, and it scores 80 instead of 74. What you gain is household: Marmee is a mother with a standard.
The eight
- 8Industry
School, nursing, and the mission are work, not a feeling.
- 7Household
Families in the cove are large, armed with pride, and not hers to manage.
- 8Piety
Faith is the reason she is there. Doubt is allowed in the room.
- 7Courage
She stays through fever and feuds she did not grow up with.
- 6Republic
The cove has its own law. The mission brings another one. Both are shown.
- 7Temperance
Poverty is not prettied. Neither is the teacher's romance.
- 8Truth
Marshall is writing people she had heard of all her life, not a type.
- 8Stewardship
The school is the thing left standing if the romance is ignored.
