Charlotte's Web

79Worth an evening.

She does the work, the death is not hidden, and the pig gets to live.

The review

This is the one I would leave on. A girl saves a runt pig. A spider in the barn writes words in her web so he will not be killed. The work is the words. She will not live to see the next spring. The pig lives. A child can watch it, and the death is not hidden. Someone trusted the audience with a real cost.

Friendship here is labor for one season, because a season is what she has. Do not skip the end to keep everybody cheerful. What it offers is a pig who goes on, not a world where nobody dies. If you get one quiet night, take this instead of a louder rescue, and do not talk over the end.

The glance

Republic is the thin one.

Does anyone owe a neighbor, a law, or a town — or is every person out for themselves?

This phone is set for a grown person, just me. Change the ages.

The eight

8
Industry
The spider's work is the words in the web, and that work is what saves the pig.
8
Household
A girl treats a runt pig as a life worth keeping, not as a barnyard prop.
7
Piety
A small life is worth a season of labor, and the death is not hidden from the child.
8
Courage
She spends the spring she will never see so the pig can have it.
6
Republic
Words in a web have to persuade others that a runt is worth sparing.
8
Temperance
Killing the runt would be the convenient want, and the story refuses it.
9
Truth
The words do the saving they were written for, and her death is not softened.
9
Stewardship
The pig lives into the spring she spent herself to leave behind for him.

Pass it on

Apollo 13

79Worth an evening.

Keep it. Competence, calm, and a square peg of a problem. One of the best pictures of work we have.

The review

Lovell wants the moon and gets a problem instead. The film's heroism is not a speech on the lawn. It is a CO2 canister, a trajectory, a wife who is not given a false comfort, a crew that does not waste air on panic. Failure is not a metaphor. It is a set of constraints. They respect the constraints and the men come home. A country watching is the public part, and it is not tacky. People should care whether the strangers in the capsule live.

Watch it with a young person who thinks heroism is a feeling. Then look at the table of parts and say: this is what it looked like.

The glance

Piety is the thin one.

Can conscience actually stop someone, or is reverence only in the shot so it can be mocked?

Consider this

A Man for All Seasons

89 instead of 79

A Man for All Seasons is still a drama film, and it scores 89 instead of 79. What you gain is piety: Faith is the center, and it is not a mood.
